Flinders University Graduate Programs in Maritime Archaeology

______________________________________________________________________________________

Applications are now being accepted for the Flinders University Graduate Programs in Maritime Archaeology, commencing February (semester 1) or July (semester 2) 2005.

Available internally (on campus) or externally (by distance learning mode).

Flinders University offers graduate coursework programs in Maritime Archaeology, including:

Graduate Certificate in Maritime Archaeology… …6 months

Graduate Diploma in Maritime Archaeology……12 months

Master of Maritime Archaeology……………………18 months

The program is articulated, allowing students to receive credit for topics completed at a satisfactory level as they progress from the 18 unit Graduate Certificate to the 36 unit Graduate Diploma and the 54 unit Masters.

These courses are designed to meet the needs of archaeology and related graduates who wish to specialise in maritime archaeology. The Graduate Certificate in Maritime Archaeology is currently available externally, while the Master of Maritime Archaeology is offered externally (via the internet) in association with the University of Ulster (UK) as well as being offered on the Flinders University campus.

The Department of Archaeology at Flinders University has been teaching maritime archaeology at bachelor level since 1996. This specialised area of archaeology is only taught at a small number of universities throughout the world, and at only two other universities in Australia. Flinders University offers the only maritime graduate program available online in the world. Maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management are growth areas with increasing public profiles, particularly in North America and Europe, where they are almost invariably taught at the postgraduate level.

Graduate Certificate in Maritime Archaeology
The six-month Graduate Certificate provides students with: a sound theoretical and methodological grounding in maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management; an understanding and appreciation of the place and role of maritime archaeology in the interpretation of maritime sub-cultures, as well as cultures in the wider context; and knowledge of the history of maritime and underwater archaeology.

Graduates will be able to analyse and critically evaluate maritime archaeology, underwater archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management practices and the changes these have undergone during the past thirty years, as well as having an understanding the place and role of maritime archaeology as a sub-discipline of archaeology and in the interpretation of maritime sub-cultures as well as cultures in the wider context.

Graduate Diploma in Maritime Archaeology
In addition to the above, the one-year Graduate Diploma students gain extensive practical skills in conducting maritime archaeological and/or underwater archaeological fieldwork and/or laboratory research. Graduates are given the opportunity to develop extensive practical skills in conducting maritime archaeological and/or underwater archaeological fieldwork including photography, surveying, measurement and recording of underwater and maritime archaeological sites and artefacts.

Master of Maritime Archaeology
The three semester Masters program extends students knowledge of the above to include the development and implementation of skills associated with successfully planning and conducting a focussed research project and writing a research minor thesis (18,000 to 20,000 words).

Short Course - Maritime Archaeology Field School
This topic provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography (including video), recording, excavation and conservation. The topic comprises practical exercises and associated lectures and seminars on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists.

In 2005 the field school will be run at Port Arthur, Tasmania, and in 2006 at Myall Lakes, NSW. The field school has previously been taught at Port Victoria, SA in 2001 and 2002 and at Portarlington, Vic. in 2004. The topic has a quota of 20 students, and applicants must hold a certified open water diving certificate with a minimum of 15 hours underwater, together with a current diving medical certificate.
