Lightship Nantucket sunk by R.M.S. Olympic.

BOSTON - The federal government has sued a group of deep sea divers to demand the return of artifacts recovered from the wreck of a U.S. Lighthouse Service ship that sank more than six decades ago, taking four lives.

The Justice Department said in its lawsuit that a group called the Boston Sea Rovers salvaged items last year from the Lightship Nantucket, even though they had been warned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1999 not to disrupt the site about 50 miles south of Nantucket.

The Boston Sea Rovers agreed at a court hearing on Friday to stop working at the site and to turn over all artifacts to federal marshals pending the outcome of the court case.

David Morton, president of Boston Sea Rovers, said the divers are part of a nonprofit group that spent money to salvage the artifacts with the intent of displaying them in a museum.
