Goa has found a place on the map of marine archaeology with underwater explorations by geologists and marine archaeologists unearthing submerged shipwrecks during the last one decade.

Spearheading the explorations is the National institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, which has discovered four such wrecks since 1989 and is continuing the search and research for more such wreckages and hidden treasures in the waters of Goa.

It is interesting to note that an Australian company has submitted a report which indicated that there could be as many as 500 such submerged shipwrecks belonging to the Portuguese period at various underwater locations.
