A four-wheel drive group says it supports the Queensland Government's decision to reduce the speed limit near a shipwreck on Fraser Island's main thoroughfare.

The Minister for Sustainability, Andrew McNamara, says the speed limit has been lowered to 40 kilometres per hour around the Maheno wreck on 75 Mile Beach from today to protect the safety of tourists.

Jeff Chase from Four Wheel Drive Queensland says he expects drivers will obey the change when it is implemented early next year.

"I think that could be a very good safety issue ... there are lots of people who visit the Maheno. I think people should slow down where there's a high population or density of tourists," he said.
