GALVESTON, Texas -- A ship that for decades ferried students from Texas A&M-Galveston around the world will be sunk off South Padre Island.

Authorities said the 61-year-old "Texas Clipper" will be sunk this summer and used as an artificial reef to attract fish, divers and fishermen.

The Galveston County Daily News reports the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working on contracts for the ship to be cleaned, towed about 17 miles off the coast and sunk.

The vessel -- from 1965 until 1994 -- was an ocean-going classroom for maritime science, oceanography and marine biology students at A&M's Galveston campus. Before that it was an ocean liner.

During World War II, the ship was the USS Queens, a 473-foot ship carried troops wounded from the battlefield.
